Michael Jary composed the melancholic "Sing, Nachtigall sing" for the movie "Auf Wiedersehen, Franziska", directed by the talented Helmut Käutner in 1941. In the movie, which starred Marianne Hoppe and Hans Söhnker, it is heard as background music being played on a gramophone. The best known and - in my opinion best - recorded version is the one by Evelyn Künneke, recorded in 1943. This recording by Will Glahé and his orchestra was made earlier in 1941. The sound is very different from Künneke's and has an exotic feel to it (which is the way the song is heard in the movie). The vocalists are not credited and it is clearly not the popular Schuricke-Terzett. If anyone has any ideas who they are, feel free to leave your comments. About the video : I made 2 videos for this song - one which has the movie and its stars as its theme and one with images of Berlin in the summer of 1945. I found the second video the more powerful - considering the song's lyrics (in translation : Sing nightingale sing, a song of days long gone - Sing nightingale sing touch my weary heart etc.) Last video of this cycle for the time being. The song "Wish me luck as you wave me goobye" was featured in the 1939 picture "Shipyard Sally", which starred Britain's nr 1 female artist : Gracie Fields or "our Gracie" as she was commonly known... The year of its release being 1939, the song soon got a special meaning and remains closely associated with the early days of the Second World War. In France the song became known as "Souris-moi et dis- moi Bonne Chance" and was recorded by Lucienne Delyle. Billy Cotton (1899-1969) was a succesful band leader and race car driver who - from the 1950s onwards - also hosted his own shows on both BBC radio and television... A big hit from 1935 was the Puszta-Fox from the operetta "Dorozsmal Szélmalom". The most famous recording of this track is the one by Barnabas von Geczy (see Dairyman716 channel). I would like to present the version recorded by master violinist and composer Georges Boulanger. You will notice that Boulanger's arrangement is somewhat different from von Geczy's. The video is dedicated to a "child of the puszta", Hungarian Marika Rökk. The first sequence is from an early movie : "Heisses Blut" (1935/36, her second movie for UFA and set in Hungary ), combined with pictures of Marika Rökk from my personal collection. The last sequence is from "Tanz mit dem Kaiser" (1941, equally set in Hungary at the time of the Austro-Hungarian empire) featuring Marika Rökk as she is best remembered today. Both sequences seem a good fit to the music ... First up is the great Eva Busch with "Du sollst nicht traurig sein" (Don't be sad) - a song about a love that has ended... Like the song on the flipside of the record "Zigarette / Eine Zigarette lang" the song was composed by Rudolf Nelson. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, Eva Busch and her husband, Ernst Busch, left Germany. They went to Holland where she appeared on radio and made recordings in several languages. She even went to the USA to make a few records. After she and Ernst Busch divorced, Eva settled in Paris to continue her singing career. Her German citizenship was revoked in 1937. At the outbreak of WWII she was detained with other Germans in Gurs, but was going on after a few weeks because we knew that was anti-Nazi. He returned to Paris and continued his career, now occupied Paris ... In 1941, the third day of their exposure to ABC Music Hall, who was arrested Eva Busch politically unreliable by the Gestapo and deported to Ravensbrück. The Ramblers dance band were without any doubt Holland's most popular swing orchestra. Formed in 1926 they introduced jazz and swing music to large audiences with Theo Uden Masman as the band's leader from 1926 to 1964.... The Ramblers performed not only in Holland but abroad as well and played with prominent musicians such as Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter.... In 1933 they performed on the VARA radio network and would stay there until 1964. In 1935 Jack Bulterman joinded and under his influence Dutch repertoire was featured prominently on the band's playlist and recordings. During the Second World War the band continued to perform on stage as well as on he German controlled radio station "Nederlandsche Omroep". This was regarded by many as collaboration and in 1941 the band's two jewish musicians Sal Doof and Sem Nijveen had to leave (members of the band would however help and support jewish musicians who had gone underground). From 1942 onwards The Ramblers had to change their name as well since it sounded too English. The alternative "De Remblers" was rejected and The Ramblers became known as Theo Uden Masman en zijn Dansorkest / Het Dansorkest onder leiding van Theo Uden Masman. After the liberation in 1945 The Ramblers stood accused of collaborationist activities. The verdict was relatively mild : The Ramblers were banned from performing for a period of 6 months, Theo Uden Masman himself for a year.
